Anacapa Island (Joel's Journeys #8)

Submitted by Bubbling Spring... on August 1, 2018 - 4:28pm

Here is an idea to beat the heat and escape from the crowds: take a boat ride to one of the Channel Islands. Island Packers offers round-trip boat rides to Anacapa Island for $59.00. The 11-mile trip leaves from Channel Islands Harbor at 9:30am and takes about an hour. You will likely see dolphins, sea lions, and even whales on the ride to or from the island.

July 3, 2019 - 3:00pm

After two decades performing for children and family audiences, Christopher knows the secret to making kids sit quietly and watch a magic show. The secret: they don’t! Children love Christopher T. Magician’s magic because his audiences never just sit and watch. His audiences are as much a part of the show as he is, constantly interacting, shouting, helping, and participating. This event is free and open to the public. Children of all ages welcome!

Central Coast (Joel's Journeys #5)

Submitted by Bubbling Spring... on November 8, 2016 - 2:19pm
Image of ocean's horizon from rocky coastline

One of the most scenic areas of our coast is north of San Luis Obispo. The shoreline turns rugged as the mountains rise steeply from the ocean.  Abundant coastal fog in the summer months makes conditions suitable for coast redwoods to grow.  One of the best spots to see the redwoods is Big Basin National Park.  To get there drive the 101 to just south of San Jose and head west towards the coast. From Big Basin our next attraction is Point Lobos, which is just south of Carmel, on Highway 1.

Death Valley (Joel's Journeys #4)

Submitted by Bubbling Spring... on October 17, 2016 - 11:49am
Horizon with goldish colored sandstone mountains

The lowest point in the United States, at 282 feet below sea level, is Death Valley National Park. In addition to being the lowest point, Death Valley has the hottest recorded temperature on earth—134 Fahrenheit! Average rainfall is less than two inches per year, making Death Valley a difficult environment for plants to grow. This produces a barren environment in which the amazing colors of the rocks are highlighted.

Photo of Ada Lovelace

In her 1843 translation of an article on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, Ada Byron Lovelace (1815-1852) added notations three times the length of the original text. The "Notes" earned her a place in computer history when they were later recognized as the first detailed description of a computer, including what is now considered a software program. In recognition of her enlightened ideas that were over 100 years before their time, the United States Department of Defense named its Ada programming language after her in 1980.

Human imagination moved to the dark side in an attempt to explain fearful, unknown, and hard to understand circumstances; thus, monsters were born. Many kinds of monsters have been imagined by humans and depicted in visual and performing arts. Enjoy learning about Frankenstein, Dracula, gorgons, demons, cyclops, Cerberus, Minotaur and much more.

Hill Road - Pi Day Celebration

image says i love pi, with love represented as a heart
March 14, 2020 - 12:00pm

Pi Day - for the love of math...and pie. The Greek letter “π” is the symbol for pi (the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter). Pi Day is an annual celebration of math and learning, and it also happens to be Einstein’s birthday, so come celebrate with us!

We will be making pi day bracelets, printing π symbol cookie cutters on our 3D printer, and other fun Pi Day activities. Children ages 6-16 can complete our Pi Day challenge to win a certificate for a Pizza Man Dan’s personal pizza pie.

Little folded paper boxes

Stuck indoors this season? Try folding a paper origami box. Also called a masu box, it is beautiful in its functional simplicity. All you need is a piece of square paper. The finished box makes a great hiding place for small treasures or gifting for the holidays. With a pair of boxes, you can use one as the box and the other as a lid to wrap small gifts. Visit WikiHow for instructions!

The Ray D. Prueter Library even used the design as a display piece:

You can create no-wire-circuits with tin foil, paper clips, pennies and other conductive stuff laying around. It's super fun and easy. All you need is an LED light, a battery, and some imagination.

You can easily recreate this engaging STEM craft using inspiration from Curiosity Machine.

Do cool stuff like this at the Library's Makestuff workshops. Hope to see you there!
