Zion National Park (Joel’s journey’s #16)

Submitted by Bubbling Sprin… on

This blog is about the fourth most visited national park in the United States.  Located about 163 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Zion National Park gets crowded for good reason as you will see from the pictures.

My suggestion is to arrive at the park as early as possible (8am or before) and to visit in the fall or spring.

My next visit will be in March when snow should be present and crowds should be lighter. To get there take Interstate 15 127 miles past Las Vegas, then exit on to Utah Highway 9 just past St. George, Utah.

Most of my pictures were taken in 2016 on the Observation Point Trail, which is currently closed due to a rock slide. It looks down on the most crowded section of the park around the visitor’s center. When intact, this trail is about four miles long and goes up about 2,100 feet in elevation. You can, however, get a similar view from the Angel’s Landing Trail which, though its highest point is 700 feet below Observation Point, is not for those who are afraid of heights. Since the rock slide it is only possible to get to Observation Point by the East Mesa Trail which requires several miles of driving on a dirt road that begins near the east entrance to the park. To stay up on current conditions check the park website, and for more detailed information on trails I suggest Joe’s Guide to Zion National Park.
