The Story Behind the Photo: Foster Park Lion Entrance Markers

Submitted by Fun at Foster on

Hello again my name is David and I am a Library Tech at E.P. Foster Library and amateur photographer.

This is the story behind the photo.

This is a photo of one of two Foster Park Lion Entrance Markers. They are located on both sides of Casitas Vista Road, just beyond Foster Park.  This is the north lion, it was dedicated in 1907. The markers are approximately 10 feet tall and made of sandstone.

Both lions show some wear, but the detail is remarkable for their age. I find the north lion quite charming, I'm happy I stumbled upon him. The lions remind me of the lions in the book, Lost in the library: a story of Patience & Fortitude, by Josh Funk. It’s a wonderful and timely book.

The lions provide a gateway to some fascinating history. Up the road is the Foster Bowl and to the right, the road leads to Lake Casitas. This area makes for a nice day trip.

My book recommendation for the area is Forgotten Foster Park, by Gwen Alferes. It's a gem of a book. Lots of local history and landmarks in this book. I highly recommend it.

Thanks. Keep reading.
