The Story Behind the Photo: Camp Scheideck

Submitted by Fun at Foster on

Hello again my name is David and I am a Library Tech at E.P. Foster Library and amateur photographer.

This is the story behind the photo.

This is a photo of a chapel located at Camp Scheideck.  Camp Scheideck is about 35 miles north of Ojai. It is still inside the boundaries of Ventura County.

Camp Scheideck is a relatively small town consisting of a chapel and other western-style structures. There is also a restaurant and saloon in the town.

Besides exploring the town, Camp Scheideck is a great starting point for entry into the Los Padres National Forest. The trail that is worth exploring is the Gene Marshall-Piedra Blanca Reyes Creek Trail.

It's a beautiful area that offers very rugged and challenging hiking, so please be prepared.

If you are up for some hiking I highly recommend reading, Hiking & backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura: a complete guide to the trails of the southern Los Padres National Forest, by Craig Carey. It is a very detailed book with maps and trailhead locations.

A great book with a western flair for young children is, Cowboy Small, by Louis Lenski. The book journals the day in the life of a small cowboy.

Thank you and keep reading.
