One of the most scenic areas of our coast is north of San Luis Obispo. The shoreline turns rugged as the mountains rise steeply from the ocean. Abundant coastal fog in the summer months makes conditions suitable for coast redwoods to grow. One of the best spots to see the redwoods is Big Basin National Park. To get there drive the 101 to just south of San Jose and head west towards the coast. From Big Basin our next attraction is Point Lobos, which is just south of Carmel, on Highway 1. This state park has been described as one of the "greatest meetings of land and sea on earth.” The rugged coastline, turquoise water, pine trees, and wildflowers make it a scenic wonder. On your way back to Ventura County, take in the scenes down the coast by continuing on Highway 1. A must stop is Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. A half-mile hike takes you to McWay Falls, one of only two waterfalls that empty into the ocean in California. Sixty miles more of scenic but winding coast driving gets you back to San Luis Obispo and the 101.
