Anacapa Island (Joel's Journeys #8)

Submitted by Bubbling Spring... on August 1, 2018 - 4:28pm

Here is an idea to beat the heat and escape from the crowds: take a boat ride to one of the Channel Islands. Island Packers offers round-trip boat rides to Anacapa Island for $59.00. The 11-mile trip leaves from Channel Islands Harbor at 9:30am and takes about an hour. You will likely see dolphins, sea lions, and even whales on the ride to or from the island.

The return pickup is at 3:15pm, which allows plenty of time to explore, since Anacapa Island is less than two miles wide. The island is mostly flat, although you will climb 154 steps up the cliff from the landing area. Views are spectacular at Inspiration Point and at many other spots from which you can look down at the cliffs. You will have to share the island with thousands of noisy seagulls raising their young on a small island with no predators. On the return trip, the boat will take you past the spectacular rock arch that is one of the symbols of the Channel Islands National Park.
